The Destrier was a superior warhorse, selected for the battlefield for its strength and courage, yet calm nature. It carried knights in battles, tournaments, and jousts, and is described by contemporary sources as the Great Horse due to its size and strong reputation. Destriers had a reputation for tremendous physical strength, agility and a calm and loyal nature. They showed immense bravery in battle and could withstand the most chaotic, severe battles. The highly prized Destrier was extremely rare, very expensive, and known to have intense loyalty to its owners. The word Destrier derives from the Latin root word dexter, meaning on the right side. It is believed the Destrier was led by a squire along a knight’s right side until needed for battle. Knights rode other horses until engaging in battle, where they would switch horses to the superior Destrier to engage the enemy.
